Chords play a major part in learning the piano, and once you have learned them you can use them in so many different ways. They are an exciting part of playing music, and all music and songs are formed fom chord structures. Basic chords are 3 notes struck down together at the same time, and they sound pretty good!!!!

I always think it is good to learn chords especially when you are starting out as a beginner, as when you develop your skills as a pianist you will see how chords are linked to everything you play

You have two popular SOUNDING CHORDS being MAJOR & MINOR.
MAJOR, you could describe as the HAPPY sounding CHORD, you will find these in lots of POP & ROCK songs….MINOR chords are the SAD sounding chords, and once again these will commonly be found in lots of ROCK & POP songs.

To work out MAJOR CHORDS, there is an EASY TO FOLLOW FORMULA you can use, so for example if we start on C, you will then CLIMB four STEPS, including the BLACK NOTES, moving to the right and you should get to E, then CLIMB another three STEPS, and you should reach G. So there you have it your first MAJOR CHORD…..

THE FORMULA IS: – R = ROOT NOTE so the note you want a chord for… + 4 STEPS + 3 STEPS. The fingering to use for this is – RIGHT HAND, USE YOUR THUMB 3RD AND 5TH, and your LEFT HAND it is just reverse, so use yourŅTH, 3RD AND THUMB.

MINOR chords are another important and easy to learn chord, THE FORMULA You need is: – R(oot) + 3 STEPS + 4 STEPS. So work it out the same way as a MAJOR chord, BUT the numbers are just around the other way. So if we do A MINOR together, you will start on A and CLIMB up 3 STEPS, so your 2nd note in the chord is C, and then CLIMB a further 4 STEPS, so your 3rd note A MINOR chord is E…

So now you know how to work out ALL MAJOR AND MINOR CHORDS….I would suggest doing all the WHITE NOTES TO START WITH…So work out C D E F G A & B. Once you have these, you can start putting some chords together and play some TUNES!
